El Triunfo

a trip to the mining past

Forty-five kilometers south of La Paz, lies El Triunfo, a mining town that seems to have stopped time. Where life once bustled with more than 10,000 miners, today there are only about three hundred inhabitants, according to the latest census. In the mid-19th century, waves of miners from Mexico and the United States arrived in the town, attracted by the promise of gold and silver hidden in the mountains to the south. In its golden age, El Triunfo was not only a hive of mining activity, but also a vibrant cultural hub, home to renowned pianist Francisca Mendoza. It is said that, at one point, there were more pianos than people in town, with instruments brought from places so far away that each key seemed to resonate with otherworldly stories. Today, the piano museum is testimony to that musical heritage, being one of the most captivating attractions for visitors.

The rebirth of El Triunfo has come in the form of color and art. Thanks to the Color of Memory project, its colonial buildings have been revitalized with murals that narrate the history and culture of the region, giving the town back its lost splendor. In addition, its streets breathe a mixture of nostalgia and novelty; visitors can stroll among cozy cafes, stores and restaurants that mix the old with the modern, such as the Bar El Minero, once a laboratory for the mines. You can't leave El Triunfo without touring its old mining grounds, where imposing chimneys stand as guardians of a glorious past. The most emblematic is "La Romana", 35 meters high and, according to rumor, designed by Gustav Eiffel himself, the genius behind the Eiffel Tower.

To complete the experience, a must-see is the cactus sanctuary on the outskirts of town. In its 6 hectares of garden, some of the rarest and most endangered species in the world are preserved, such as the Pereskiopsis cacti, which, curiously, still retain leaves, a rarity in the cactus kingdom. The ideal time to admire them is just after the rainy season in August, when life is reborn in this green desert.
